Fakers and Malingers Beware: EMIS and WorkSTEPS Join Forces
Enhanced Medical & Insurance Systems Inc. (EMIS) and WorkSTEPS, the national provider of employment testing and functional capacity evaluations, have finalized arrangements for WorkSTEPS to include EMIS’s two On-Line Expert Systems – the Mensana Pain Validity Test (PVT) and the Mensana Diagnostic Paradigm and Treatment Algorithm (DP&TA) – as part WorkSTEPS’s network of more than 1,100 licensed facilities.
As documented by seven articles in peer-reviewed journals, the Pain Validity Test (PVT) can predict with 94% accuracy which patients will have moderate or severe abnormalities on objective medical testing and, with 85% accuracy, which ones will have mild or no objective abnormalities, i.e. who are faking their pain or malingering.
The PVT was jointly developed by Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Mensana Clinic, which Business Week magazine recognized as two of the top eight pain clinics in the US.
Through its ability to pinpoint fakers and malingerers, the PVT delivers meaningful returns for Auto Accident Insurance Carriers, Workers Compensation Insurance Carriers, Third Party Administrators, Reinsurance Companies, and Self Insured Businesses by enabling them to avoid wasting increasingly scarce IME, surveillance, and other resources on the 87% of patients whose complaints of pain are legitimate.
The National Council on Compensation Insurance has published documentation that by using the Pain Validity Test a major insurer could have saved an average of $1,654 per claim, for a 727% return on investment.
According to Larry Feeler, WorkSTEPS Founder and CEO, “The verbally-based Pain Validity Test is the perfect complement to our own physically-based Functional Capacity Evaluation techniques. Together, they represent an extremely effective one-two punch in ferreting out manufactured claims at an early stage.”
“Just as important,” points out Ken Oboz, EMIS Co-Founder and CEO, “the Diagnostic Paradigm & Treatment Algorithm can go on to pin-point the real causes of the pain being suffered by genuine claimants. Then, by getting these patients well and off the books, it can generate extremely large savings.”
“This is a genuine win-win,” continues Oboz. “The EMIS Tests generate big savings for insurance carriers, TPAs, and self-insured business, on the one hand, and relief for legitimate pain sufferers, on the other. The only losers are the fakers and malingers.”
