EMIS Acquires Licenses to Unique On-Line Expert Systems
Enhanced Medical & Insurance Systems Inc. (EMIS) has finalized its acquisition of exclusive worldwide licensing rights to
• the Mensana Clinic Pain Validity Test (PVT) and
• the Mensana Clinic Diagnostic Paradigm and Treatment Algorithm (DP&TA).
Together these two tests make it possible for auto and other liability insurance carriers, workers comp insurance carriers, third party administrators, and self-insured employers to realize significant savings by
• ferretting out fakers and malingers
• identifying the proper treatment regimens for genuine chronic pain sufferers.
The Pain Validity Test was jointly developed by Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Mensana Clinic, institutions which Business Week magazine has recognized as two of the top eight pain clinics in the US.
As documented by articles in seven medical and other peer-reviewed journals, the Pain Validity Test (PVT) can
• predict - with 94% accuracy - which patients complaining of pain will have moderate or severe abnormalities on objective medical testing
• predict - with 85% accuracy - which patients will have mild abnormalities or none at all, i.e. those who are “faking” their pain or exaggerating it.
Through its ability to pinpoint fakers and malingerers, the PVT delivers meaningful returns for Auto Accident Insurance Carriers, Workers Compensation Insurance Carriers, Third Party Administrators, Reinsurance Companies, and Self Insured Employers by enabling them to
• target increasingly scarce independent medical examination, surveillance, and other resources on the 13% of claimants who are faking or exaggerating their pain
• avoid wasting such resources on the 87% of patients whose complaints of pain are legitimate.
The National Council on Compensation Insurance has published documentation that by using the Pain Validity Test a major insurance carrier could have saved an average of $1,554 per claim, for an overall 627% return on investment.
“Just as important,” points out KenOboz, EMIS Co-Founder and CEO, “the Mensana Clinic Diagnostic Paradigm & Treatment Algorithm can go on to pin-point the real causes of the pain being suffered by genuine claimants. Then, by getting these patients well and off the books, it can generate extremely large savings.”
“This is a genuine win-win,” continues Oboz, “The EMIS Tests generate big savings for insurance carriers, third party administrators, and self-insured businesses, on the one hand, and relief for legitimate pain sufferers, on the other. The only losers are the fakers and malingers.”
The Pain Validity Test meets the criteria outlined by the US Supreme Court for admissibility at trial as expert testimony.
Both Tests can be administered on-line to both English- and Spanish-speaking claimants at more than 1,500 proctored testing locations nationwide. Results are normally available within 5 minutes of test completion.
